I'm not quite sure whether to praise or condemn Sparta for its musical direction. While it continues to discern itself against the remains of its previous rock 'n roll outfit At The Drive-In, Sparta has spontaneously detached itself far beyond recognition. I have to agree that its new sound does have its succumbing catchiness, but it flirts too intimately with bubblegum rock 'n roll genres that undermine and weaken the group's strength. 2002's Wiretap Scars was definitely a hasty departure from ATDI's explosive musical formula, but Porcelain, Sparta's newest collection of rock anthems, clearly reverts back to its original roots entirely. And this leads to a plethora of conclusions about the stability of the record as a recommended venture.
There are several radio-friendly tracks on Porcelain. In fact, most of the record sounds remarkably linear, raising many questions regarding the band's, dare I say, authenticity. It is truly difficult to reestablish yourself after ejecting from a truly exceptional outfit, but the ATDI members of Sparta have shown no respect and gratitude to its forgotten sounds. Songs like 'La Cerca' and the album opener 'Guns of Memorial Park' provide a minute glimpse to the chaotic sound of ATDI but never fully emerge as resembling entities of it. Furthermore, many of the tracks on the record appear to lack any authenticity at all, creating a muddled listening experience. While Mars Volta distinguished its high-volume concept and freak-out-the-neighbors formula with its apocalyptic wails and catastrophic soundscapes, Sparta has developed a middle-of-the-road rock entity, seldom swaying away from its new and unimproved sound structure.
The failure of Porcelain will definitely not reduce the bands' acceptance as mainstream rock icons, but its musical direction may jeopardize Sparta's recognition as innovative musicians. In fact, if failure is purely judged on the number of copies the album will sell, Sparta's career may become another chapter of rock 'n roll success. Unfortunately, it is important to acknowledge your roots; and for Sparta to avoid any unwelcome negativity, a trip down memory lane should rekindle the band members' days of musical glory in the future. As for Porcelain, we'll call it an 'experimental' journey, hopefully.

Sparta is known historically as the greatest warriors of ancient Greece, but prior to that Laconia was well known for creating beautiful painted pottery and exceptional bronze work, what happened to their way of life that effected their creativity?Could War have played a part in the loss of their creative edge?Perhaps they couldn’t keep up with the way the other city states where progressing.Athens was ripe to become a cultural center around the same time,Was Sparta intimidated by their thirst for power and culture? There is a lot of speculation and debate as to the real cause of Sparta switching their focuses to military. We may never truly know what happened but he do have a little information about what may have happened.

After the Ancient Greek Dark Ages a new time period began. This new time period was known as the Archaic period brought a lot of new ideas to Greek culture. The Archaic period lasted from 800 B.C.E. – 480 B.C.E.The beginning of this period saw a swell in human population. The increase in the population caused people to settle down and start communities again. The communities grew and thusly gave birth to the Greek polis or city state.A new alphabet was also introduced since the previous one was lost during the dark ages. The rise in population mixed with a better organized culture gave way to the first Olympic Games in which competitors from all over Greece could come and participate in feats of strength and skill.Towards the end of this period we also see the beginnings of the of the Greek classical period with the rise of drama and more intellectual thought.Creativity exploded during the Archaic period, sculpture was taking big steps towards a more realistic style, decorative pottery was also moving into a more realistic realm and away from the geometric styling of the dark ages.Greece was making a lot of changes and even Laconia, including Sparta, went though a very creative time during the Archaic period (Kagan).
At the end of the Dark Ages Sparta was already making beautiful painted ceramics. At this time they were using the geometric style. The geometric style consisted of tripes, zig-zags and other repetitive shapes, sometimes surrounding scenes of stiff, almost Egyptian styled figures. The introduction of figures, animals and other lifeforms was due to an Orientalizing period. This style was adopted by traveling to other lands, such as Egypt and being impressed with their artwork.Figure painting became more and more popular around the middle of the Archaic period as the Orientalizing period ended. It was around this time that the artists of Laconia started using a technique borrowed from Corinth. It was this style of black-figure painting that would become a trademark of ancient greek art.The Laconian artists were especially talented at creating pottery, so much so that their work could be found all over ancient Greece and was considered a very nice gift to give nobility (Bencze). This is also the time that figures were beginning to be sculpted in not only contraposto positions but also be free standing instead of a relief. These sculptures would revolutionize the quest for a more realistic human form.
There were a few types of vessels that the Laconians were especially known for making.A couple of these Items were cups called kylixes and Kraters.Kylixes were a cup that was specially designed for drinking wine because it’s shallow bowl keept the wine solids from reaching the mouth of the drinker.Kraters were used primarily for mixing.Kraters can be distinguished from other vessels by their large opening and and base.A common purple dye that was used in Laconian pottery painting was called Tyrian Purple and is derived from the Murex shell. These shells can be found on the beaches near Sparta (Ruscillo). Bronze working was also something the Laconians were known for, if not more so than their painted pottery. They created small bronze sculptures and vessels. These broze vessels were often decorated with faces and animal motifs. These items were so beautifully made that they were often left at temples as an offering.Young nude girls were also a popular motif of Laconian bronze work, so much so that a piece of bronze work could be identified as Laconian just because of the motif. These girls were often part of the base of a mirror holder (Bencze). Some of the other small scale sculpture included gods, humans and animals.“The Spartan sanctuary of Artemis Orthia is also the find-spot of other unusual series of votive offerings, among which are the curious tiny lead relief-figurines, representing a winged goddess, a variety of human figures, and different kinds of animals. (Bencze)”.Bronze items from Laconia were not only popular with the other Greek city states but all over the Mediterranean. These items were especially popular Italy.Artifacts have been found as far away as Central Europe (Bencze).

Towards the end of the sixth century B.C.E. the Laconians created much less work due most likely to Athenian pottery and metal work until and they lost some of their trademarks and started creating more generic work.At this time, toward the end of the Archaic period the Spartans suddenly stopped their creative endeavors in favor of making all of their citizens serve in the military. All the young were tested as to whether or not they would survive. When the males were seven years old they started their military training and entered and served in the military from age twenty to age sixty.Women were also educated in the same way the men were but with out the military aspects.Service to Sparta was the main idea that was bestowed upon every citizen. Most of Spartan daily life revolved around serving Sparta. The men would train for battle and rarely see their families. They would all live together at the training academy and practice various types of endurance. The women would spend the majority of their time taking care of the families.Aside from homemaking, women also received a formal education (Budin).
It is speculated as to why the Spartans stopped their creative endeavors and formed a militaristic society.Generally it is assumed that they were preparing for battle against the Messenians. They would fight the Messenians for almost 20 years, which would seem like a long battle to the ancient Greeks.Generally fighting wouldn’t last more than a few hours, or even thirty minutes. These quick battles would be for the sake of the farmer solders who still had to tend to their land after the battle if they were able.So as Laconia was known for it’s beautiful ceramics and sculpture now it’s main city Sparta would be known as the greatest warriors in Ancient Greece (Giotto).
I’m convinced that if the desire to conquer the Messenians wasn’t so great the Spartans and the rest of Laconia wouldn’t have given up the pottery painting, sculpting of any of their other crafts.I can understand why they wanted to oppress the Messenians, Always having a source of food and being able to have a society that focuses on other things than food production.I think after having a strangle hold on the Messenians they could have focused some of their attention on their crafts.Who knows, the level of their skill could have matched or surpassed that of the Italian renaissance. In any case the artwork of the Laconians is still impressive and an achievement for it’s time.
